Did you know that unforgiveness is a disease? Just in case you did not, let me warn you. It is. Unforgiveness can cause a hardening of the heart. In other words, not forgiving someone who has hurt you in some way can cause you to stop being kind to others.
A hardened heart can cause major disruption in your life. It can even delay your blessings and your destiny. How do I know? I'm glad you asked. I had a situation in my life that caused my heart to harden against an individual. I honestly did not want to be in the same room with this person.
She was evil, taunted me every chance she got. To be honest, there were days I really just wanted to go in on her. But God held me together. Although I did not like it, He continuously reminded me of His word in Romans 12:9, "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord."
Let's be real, this is hard to do sometimes. I know for me it was. I really had to work at this and focus on the word of God. I sometimes felt God was taking too long; and even prayed that He would give me permission to take care of it. Well, He did, just not the way I wanted to.
Instead, He gave me a strict command in Matthew 5:44, "But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;" As my sister would say, "let me keep this 100". I felt like God had jokes. Really God you want me to love, bless and do good. After all she has done to me you can't be serious.
Then I was convicted by the same word. God said yes, my word does not have a double standard. In other words, what is good for her is good for you. Ok God can you please speak so I can understand; and He said, you want me to love, bless and do good by you right? Lil girl you can't be serious. Who told you you didn't have to obey? I distinctly told you what to do and if you're going to get what I have for you, that is exactly what you need to do.
Forgiveness is not about another person. Forgiveness is about healing what ails you. Some diseases can only be treated and not healed. Fortunately for us though, a hardened heart can be healed. All you have to do is trust God with what is causing you to hurt.
This is something I have never understood. Even when I did it. Why do you want to hold on to something that causes you to hurt? If it causes you pain, take it to the healer who can heal anything and let Him cure you of this disease. It is my prayer my sister that you will "Get Well Soon!"
